The Most Important Thing You Can Do For Your Career

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

Here is the thing, I RARELY give advice that is applicable to everyone. But I have one piece of advice that needs to be shouted from every rooftop.

Do Something Creative.

Wait, wait, wait....hear me out. I know this seems like a ridiculous piece of advice, but I promise you that it has the ability to change everything. Are you frustrated with your boss or a coworker? Feeling stuck in your current career? Can't find a solution to a problem?

Do something out of your normal routine.

Research shows that doing a creative activity will boost your mental well being - WIN! Let's be real, we could all use a mental health boost every once in awhile. But most importantly, it forces us to think differently about the world around us. Visiting a place we have never been or trying a new task for the first time forces us to be present. When you are present you are more likely to notice small details in the world around you. This small shift in our daily routine has a way of altering the way we look at problems or challenges. We find ourselves open to new ideas, more aware of opportunity, and willing to accept change.

What can you do that's creative? Check out some of my favorite activities below!

  • Go on a walk and count as many blue/red/yellow/orange items as you can

  • Try a new recipe

  • Pretend to be a photographer and take photos of all the flowers in the neighborhood

  • Practice a skill from childhood that you enjoyed (play an instrument, jump rope, etc.)

  • Learn a new skill (take a free class online!)

  • Visit a new local business

  • Become a tourist in your own city

  • Read a book

  • Write a letter to a friend

  • Learn how to play a new game

  • Sit outside for 5 minutes without any distractions

I don't care if you are a CEO of a company or if you are looking for your first job, do yourself a favor - Get Creative.
