How To Write An Interview Thank You Letter

Updated: Jul 28

You spent hours preparing for your interview, and now it's over! You feel confident that you nailed it, and now you're one step closer to your dream job.

But there's one more important thing you need to do before waiting for those next steps – write a thank-you email!

What is an Interview Thank You Email?

It's a simple email designed to thank your interviewer for their time and express your continued interest in the position.

Sending a thank-you email shows that you're genuinely interested and excited about the opportunity. It also demonstrates your professionalism and appreciation for their time. Interviewers often make hiring decisions based on intangible factors like fit and attitude, so this is your chance to shine!

Why You Should Send an Interview Thank You Email

A thank-you letter is the perfect opportunity to remind the interviewer why you're the best candidate for the job. You can include a quick sentence highlighting some of your most relevant skills and qualities and how they relate to the role.

If you have an online work portfolio or an active LinkedIn page be sure to include those too. This is also your chance to mention anything that you forgot to say during the interview. A thank-you email ensures that you stay top of mind, and it's also just good manners to thank them for their time!

What to Include in an Interview Thank You Email

The best interview thank-you letters are short, sweet, and to the point. A few brief paragraphs are all you need to get your message across.

Here are some fundamental points to include:

Thank Them for Their Time

Thank your interviewer(s) for their time and for giving you the opportunity to learn more about the role.

Reiterate Your Interest

Use this opportunity to express your excitement about the role and reaffirm your interest in the company.

Highlight Your Qualifications

Include one or two sentences about how your experience and expertise make you the perfect candidate for the job. Tie your qualifications into some key requirements that were mentioned on the job listing or during the interview process. Make it easy by connecting the dots for them!

Include Links to Your Online Portfolios

If you have relevant work samples or an online portfolio, include links in your email so the interviewer can easily check them. Hopefully, you've been active on LinkedIn, too, so you can showcase what a thought leader you are!

Include a Subject Line and Signature

Your interview thank-you email should have a relevant subject line. Be sure to include the job title, "thank you," and your name. For your signature, include your full name, contact information, and a link to your LinkedIn profile.
